A Craft Shoe Makers: Weaving Success, One Footwear at a Time

When 25-year-old Iya Patrick joined the Kanadabara VSLA Group, formed by Development Teams Foundation, he had no idea that a simple skill would one day grow into a thriving business. After receiving training in Business Skills and Income Generating Activities (IGA), Patrick secured a small loan of UGX 400,000 from his VSLA group. This marked the official beginning of what would become IYA Craft Shoe Makers.

Before this turning point, Patrick used to repair neighbors’ shoes to earn a little pocket money. But in October 2020, driven by passion and vision, he decided to scale up his craft. With the loan and new business knowledge, he opened a small shop focused on locally-produced footwear and leather accessories. Recognizing the power of teamwork, he invited four friends to join him—and together they formed a five-member creative unit.

Today, IYA Craft Shoe Makers is more than a business; it is a growing skills hub. The team now trains and mentors local students in footwear making and shoe repair, passing on valuable hands-on knowledge to young people who are eager to learn and earn.

Their impact is visible not only in the community but also in their weekly production. On average, the group produces and sells:

     • 10 pairs of sandals (each earning a profit of UGX 12,000)

     • 30 pairs of slippers (each earning a profit of UGX 8,000)

What began as a simple craft has now turned into a sustainable, youth-led enterprise, inspiring many other young people in the sub-county. By transforming their skills into income, Patrick and his team are proving that with the right support, young people can build profitable businesses and create opportunities for others.

IYA Craft Shoe Makers is truly weaving success one piece of footwear at a time.
